Being with the Unanswerable

I want to begin this month’s newsletter with a quote that a friend of mine (thank you, Kathleen!) recently shared with me:

“Perhaps real wisdom lies in not seeking answers at all. Any answer we find will not be true for long. An answer is a place where we can fall asleep as life moves past us to its next question. After all these years I have begun to wonder if the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.”   Rachel Naomi Remen, My Grandfather’s Blessings

Life is full of questions, isn’t it? Who am I? What is life about? What happens when we die? What is my purpose? Like most other humans, we long for answers. We want life neatly wrapped up in a package with the instruction manual, a step-by-step guide telling us all that we desire to know.

Life isn’t like that. Living in this universe comes with a sense of Mystery. In fact, that is essential to what makes life exciting and rich. We don’t know what lies around the corner. We can’t figure everything out. And so every moment, if we are truly present, is an adventure, with the capacity to open us to unknown territory, both outside of us and deep within.

I believe that we came here, into this embodiment, to pursue and explore not the answers, but the questions. To live the questions fully, and to allow the answers to flow, not into limitations and definitions, but ever greater questions. Questions impel us to continue the journey and to expand our horizons. They open the heart and the mind. And the more we open within ourselves, the more we taste and unfold into Infinite Oneness. If it is Infinite, after all, then there would be no end to our growth, transformation, and expansion!

Let those questions lead you to your true Self, which isn’t something fixed and defined, but unlimited and beyond what the “thinking mind” can conceive of.

You don’t have to do it alone, though. It helps to have a community to explore the Mystery, the Unanswerable, with. That is the purpose of Awakening Heart together, we explore the sacred mysteries in life and within our very essence. Discover the truths of perennial wisdom which lie within your own heart. Join us this month on Sunday, June 14th, from 10-11:30am in Palo Alto, for “Living in the Flow”, and see what questions and answers arise in the community and within you. Details below, or on the Awakening Heart webpage.

Enjoy the unanswerable questions – be with them, feel them, penetrate deeply into them. Enjoy being with the Mystery, and see what it reveals to you today.

"Who builds a church within his heart

And takes it with him everywhere

Is holier by far than he whose church

Is but a one-day house of prayer."

"Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials."
