You Are Not Limited to You

Humans are a strange species. We are, to my knowledge, the only species that attempts to live in insolation from other species. We may collect in human groups – and we may have a few select “pets” – but by and large we don’t consider ourselves part of the ecosystem, and certainly not kin to other living beings. After all, we are human, and therefore we transcend animal instincts.

Well, maybe not so much. Or, maybe the traits that we think define us as human aren’t limited to our species. Isn’t it rather anthropocentric to believe that we’re the only beings that think, consider the future, reflect on the past, and have feelings? What if these are traits of consciousness, of any living being, and not exclusively human? What if our experience is universal between us and animals, and maybe even other forms of life, only we experience ours through particular filters of human language, perceptions, and behavior? Be in the Flow

Brisbane-0211The morning I wrote this post, I took a Tai Chi class. I find this practice challenging in a different way than I’m used to with yoga. Every time I have taken a class – only a handful of times – I try my best to “get” the movement of the energy and enjoy it.

I’m not that great at it. My mind is too focused on getting it right and not allowing the flow to happen. I get glimpses, where I feel the energy and simply allow the movements, but most of the time I’m looking at the instructor in the mirror and wondering, should I have my elbow up higher? In Waving Hands Like Clouds, does my hand pass by my face or my throat? How far out should my foot be turned? Should I be inhaling or exhaling?

Intellectually, I know that the idea is really to feel the energy and move it around. And I can do that. But not usually at the same time that I am trying to learn a precise action. I get stuck between being in the flow, and being correct. This is a common problem with our minds. Continue Reading »

veteransday_conniehabash_spirituality_counseling_meditation_menloparkIt’s Veteran’s day as I write this, a powerful day to reflect on. As we honor those who have served in the military to protect the United States this day, I’m drawn to look at my own family’s legacy from wars long gone by. Continue Reading »

Wise Sage or Innocent Child?

wisesage_innocentchild_spirituality_conniehabash_counseling_communityFrom a young age, I’ve been attracted to spirituality. In the 80’s, I followed channelers, investigated astrology, read tarot cards, collected crystals, and did a Native American vision quest. In the 90’s, I did shamanic drumming, read mystical texts, discovered yoga, studied world religions, and sat for my first meditation. My spiritual pursuits continue to this day.

Unfortunately, right from the get-go, my “know-it-all” tendency wanted my persona to be a wise sage. Bad idea.

Why? Because when you’re trying to be a wise sage, you can’t learn anything. You have to already know something to be a wise sage, and I was just a youngster! Continue Reading »
